General Information

Maybole is a town of over 4,000 people and is a tightly knit, friendly community.

As the focal point in the surrounding rural area in which there are eight small satellite communities, Maybole provides services ranging from a day hospital, a fire station, primary and secondary education, medical, dental and veterinary surgeries, a range of shops and a supermarket, as well as convenient rail and bus links to Ayr, Glasgow and Stranraer.

An attractive and affordable place to live, Maybole also enjoys the advantages of a beautiful location and heritage. It is situated en route to two major attractions: Culzean Castle (four miles) and Turnberry Hotel and Golf Course (seven miles). Seven miles to the north: Robert Burns country and Alloway. To the south and east: beautiful countryside, pretty villages and meandering back roads and the Galloway Hills. Three miles to the west: a varied and picturesque coastline.

The ancient capital of Carrick, Maybole’s history spans many eras and topics. The ruins of the first Scottish collegiate church date from 1371, a castle dominates the High Street, the parents of Robert Burns met in the town and Maybole Tackety Boots were once world famous.

More information is available in the enclosed “A Brief Historical Guide to Maybole & North Carrick.” and the “History of the Two Churches” by Robert Paul. See also the Maybole website: www.maybole.org and www.mayboleparishchurch.org.uk.

At the turn of the last century, the town was a thriving manufacturing centre and our community buildings date from that era. The town needs to boost community participation and promote social cohesion and Maybole Parish Church has decided to adopt a key role in guiding the community towards the future.

Maybole Parish Church

The vision of the Church of Scotland is to be a church which seeks to inspire the people of Scotland and beyond with the Good News of Jesus Christ through enthusiastic worshipping, witnessing, nurturing and serving communities.

The Church of Scotland congregation in Maybole is on the brink of building a new Church. Within the building located in the heart of Maybole there will be the Carrick Centre.

Open all day every day to the entire community, the Carrick centre will bring together current Church and community activities under one roof, and welcome the disadvantaged and socially excluded.

In the meantime we currently enjoy the hospitality of Maybole Baptist Church in their building on Carrick Street while our new Church building is constructed.

Employment Profile

This appointment offers a rare opportunity for the Minister to be intimately involved in the construction of the new Maybole Parish Church and Carrick Centre on a brown field site, and the subsequent setting of goals and parameters to raise the profile of the Church within the town and wider community. The New Church will be at the heart of the Carrick Centre, and as such will be a focal point in the town for both residents and visitors.

The Minister will be expected to show the qualities of leadership and dynamism necessary to inspire the established congregation and to attract new membership from within the expanding population.

The position offers great scope for innovation. Essential attributes are self-motivation, excellent communication and inter-personal skills at all levels, and a good sense of humour. This is a challenging position in a parish which embraces both rural and urban aspects of the community, and candidates should ideally have a proven track record of achievement and success in at least one previous appointment over a period of 5-10 years. A current driving licence ls considered essential.

This is a great opportunity for the new Minister to live and work in a friendly town set in a beautiful part of south-west Scotland, to make a major contribution to the life of the community, and to establish the new Maybole Parish Church as the spiritual home for present and future generations.

New Church Building Project

The Church of Scotland will own the building which will house the Church sanctuary, several multi-purpose halls of different sizes, a café and bookshop, day centre, soft play area and an information centre.

There is scope for providing activities from crèches to conferences, cinema, local history and genealogy. There will also be an integrated, purpose built youth centre to provide activities for the young people of the town.

Research was carried out to determine what facilities the young people of Maybole would like, and as a result a ‘drop-in’ Cyber Cafe selling non-alcoholic drinks and snacks has been included in the plans. There will also be a hall which can be used for discos and games etc. and the facility will be staffed by trained youth workers.

The first sod will be cut at the turn of the year 2010 and it is planned that the new Church will take 15 months to build. An opening is therefore expected in Spring 2011.

Finance is in place for the main Church and Halls, and fund raising is continuing in order to complete the youth facility.

Designed by the architect of Bankfoot Church in Perthshire, our building incorporates many of the same ecological concepts. See more at www.bankfootchurch.org.uk.

The Manse

The Manse at No 3 Barns Terrace is located in the heart of the town, close to the New Church and Carrick Centre and to the town’s facilities. The house, comprising 6 apartments, is in excellent order throughout, with spacious off street parking and an attractive garden. Barns Terrace is off the main thoroughfare and despite its proximity to the town centre it retains a considerable degree of quietness and privacy.

Finance

Congregational membership is approximately 400, although some members make little or no financial contribution to the church.

Accounts for the past four years are available on request.

We believe that the arrival of a new Minister coupled with the excitement and interest that the new building will generate should result in improved Christian liberality of the congregation
